A Study on the Cognitive and Communicative Empathy in Psychiatric Nurses

Abstract
This study is purposed to identify the level of cognitive and communicative empathy in psychiatric nurses and also to investigate the relations between two empathic components.
The data were collected by the questionnaire and process-recoding from Sep. 5 to Oct. 10, 1994 and analyzed by the use of percentage, t-test, analysis of variance and Pearson Correlation Coefficient.
The results of analysis is as follows:
1. Cognitive empathy scores were moderate level in psychiatric nurses.
2. Communicative empathy scores were low level in psychiatric nurses.
3. There was positive correlation between cognitive and communicative empathy scores (¥ã=0.42, p<0.05).
4. There is no significant difference between the socio-demographic variables and the both empathy scores (p>0.05) except the career (p<0.05).
